In what could be the most significant scientific discovery in human history, NASA has announced compelling evidence of ancient microbial life on Mars, discovered by the Perseverance rover in the Jezero Crater.
The Discovery
Analysis of rock samples collected by Perseverance revealed fossilized structures consistent with ancient bacterial life, along with specific organic molecules and isotopic signatures that cannot be explained by non-biological processes.
"We can say with 95% confidence that these signatures indicate biological activity that occurred approximately 3.5 billion years ago," said Dr. Jennifer Trosper, NASA's Mars Exploration Program director.
